Atlantic Hurricane season is upon us, and Accuweather predicts that this year will once again be more active than the average Hurricane season. Forecasts include sixteen tropical storms, eight hurricanes, four major hurricanes, and three U.S. landfalls in the Atlantic Basin alone. It’s time to begin seriously preparing for the next few months if you haven’t started already, and that’s where I can help.

My company, Innovative Electrical, is a local electrical contracting business based in Chester, New Jersey. We’ve just received PowerPro Premier Status from Generac, which is the highest recognition possible for a generator dealer, awarded only to the largest, most-experienced generator companies in the nation. I tell you this to help paint the picture of our expertise and experience with regards to preventative maintenance.

To properly prepare for a storm, there are a multitude of actions that you should do, and today I’m providing you with the most essential things to keep in mind throughout the preparation process:

  • Survey your house prior to the storm to identify vulnerable windows or walls. Once identified, make sure you properly prepare those areas by using storm shutters, cardboard, tape, or whatever you have access to.
  • Protect any valuable items that you keep outdoors, including furniture, grills and your car. If possible, park inside a garage. At the very least, if you’re located in an area prone to flooding, park on higher ground.
  • Buy enough food and water to last you and your family for a few days, as you never know when the storm is going to break.
  • Buy flashlights, candles, and ice in the event of the power outage.
    • This part can be avoided, however, by installing a generator. Generators will keep your lights on and your food properly stored without you having to worry.

Despite the damage from recent storms, I worry that our area is still not properly prepared for this upcoming Hurricane season. Feel free to contact us with any questions at all, and follow our Facebook page for more storm-preparation tips.
